Stanley H. Barkan is the editor/publisher of the Cross-Cultural Review Series of World Literature and Art, that has, to date, produced some 350 titles in 50 different languages. His own work has been published in 15 collections, several of them bilingual (Bulgarian, Italian, Polish, Russian, Sicilian).  His latest is Strange Seasons, a poetry and photographic collaboration with Russian artist, Mark Polyakov (Sofia, Bulgaria: AngoBoy, 2007).  He was the 1991 New York City’s Poetry Teacher of the Year (awarded by Poets House and the Board of Education) and the 1996 winner of the Poor Richard’s Award, “The Best of the Small Presses” (awarded by the Small Press Center), for “25 years of high quality publishing.”  In May 2006, he was invited by Peter Thabit Jones, editor of The Seventh Quarry, to be the solo featured poet at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea, Wales.  In the Spring of 2008, he organized the historic—the first such since the death of Dylan Thomas in 1953—Dylan Thomas Tribute Tour of America, featuring Aeronwy Thomas, daughter of Dylan Thomas, and Peter Thabit Jones, poet/editor of the Swansea-based poetry magazine, The Seventh Quarry.

Crossings

For Bebe in Poland


A hundred years ago

her grandfather

crossed this bridge,

got on a train,

got on a boat,

came to America.

 

A hundred years later

his granddaughter

got on a plane,

got on a bus,

came to Ptzemysl,

crossed this bridge.

 

A hundred years from now

her grandchildren

will come to this place,

cross this bridge,

seek & find answers

in the mysteries of crossings.

  Los Angeles poet Rick Lupert is a Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee. He created PoetrySuperHighway.com and hosted the Cobalt Cafe reading for almost 21 years (which lives on as a virtual series). His 29 collections of poetry include “God Wrestler” and “High Moose Alert.” He edited the anthologies  “A Poet’s Siddur”, “A Poet’s Haggadah”,“The Night Goes on All Night.” and “Ekphrastia Gone Wild.” Rick works as a music teacher and graphic designer.
