Serenading the Eight-Fifteen
I serenade
the freight trains
with tunes played
on a silver pennywhistle
The strains of songs
the high notes
reach for the horn song
of the eight-fifteen
echoing through the valley
The railroad crossing bells ring
the whistle blows
soon the train
will meet my song
The navy & yellow locomotive
of the Alaska railroad
rolls slowly past the depot
without stopping my tune
I wave at the engineer
My mind follows the notes
of my flute
my eyes follow the round black
tanker cars
with red diamonds
of flames
& 1203
long & deliberate
the length passes
a snake slowing
for the bridge ahead
And finally the yellow & navy caboose
they slither across the bridge
carrying my pennywhistle serenade
through the taiga valley
The evening sun
shines off the jade hills
touches the white snow
touches the low clouds
